Engineering Countermeasures
Since 1994, the NRA, in conjunction with local authorities, has operated a programme whereby collision clusters on the National Road network are investigated and appropriate remedial countermeasures are implemented.
Targets for accident reductions over the years 2004 to 2006 were set out in the Government's "Road to Safety" strategy...see link below.

The NRA achieved all its targets in that Strategy, and are currently working with the RSA on a new Strategy to cover the years 2007 to 2012.
The new Road Safety Strategy is available from the RSA website (www.rsa.ie) or at

As part of the new Road Safety Strategy the NRA are committed to carrying out approximately 160 road safety remedial schemes per annum at identified collision clusters on national roads. The NRA aims to eliminate any backlog of schemes over the next three years. The number of annual schemes will then be reduced to about 80 by 2012.
The Authority is also committed to the evaluation of the Road Safety Remedial Measures programmes, and have carried out 5 year Before and After analyses on all the programmes to date.
