Going Places: Awareness Campaign to Support PPP
Several thousand copies of a detailed brochure are being issued today by the National Roads Authority. They will be sent to TDs, Councillors, public servants at national and local level, interest groups, and opinion formers. Members of the public can obtain a copy, free of charge, from Local Authorities and Libraries.
This is an important phase in a public awareness campaign aimed at generating a greater understanding of, and support for, the role that Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) can play in building a world-class roads infrastructure for Ireland.
It is the intention of the NRA to inform the public at large of the benefits and potential of PPPs because tolling is a key element of the NRA's PPP Programme. The brochure addresses the issue clearly by setting out examples of European tolling practice and shows how the NRA's proposals match with international developments. In addition, the brochure illustrates the very modest level of proposed Irish charges.
Gerry Murphy, PPP Manager says “This brochure is designed to inform the public on how PPP's can help deliver world-class roads in Ireland. The need for tolls is clearly explained and the benefits of improved road infrastructure are set out. The NRA is keen to support informed debate on it's new initiative”.
This new brochure builds on the recent release of a national survey conducted by Behaviour & Attitudes on behalf of the NRA. The key findings from that survey showed that a majority of people wanted increased investment in roads and a majority of Irish motorists supported tolls to help raise money for new roads.
