National Road Scheme Scoops Republic’s First Ceequal Environment Award

10th October 2007

The N7 Naas Road Widening and Interchange Scheme was not only completed ahead of time but also attained the first Ceequal award in the Republic of Ireland.

Ceequal is an awards scheme assessing the environmental quality of civil engineering projects – a civil engineering equivalent to Breem for buildings. The scheme publicly recognises the achievement of high environmental performance.

The Naas Road Widening and Interchange Scheme consisted of an upgrade of 14kms of the existing N7 between Rathcoole and Naas. The road was widened from a two-lane dual carriageway to a three-lane dual carriageway with four grade-separated interchanges.

The project received the award for a ‘Very Good’ environmental performance demonstrating a clear commitment to effective environmental management.

Ceequal uses a rigorous points-scoring based assessment, which is applicable to any civil engineering project and includes environmental aspects such as the use of water, energy and land as well as ecology, landscape, nuisance to neighbours, archaeology, waste minimisation and management.

Awards are made to projects in which the clients, designers and contractors go beyond the legal and environmental minima to achieve distinctive environmental standards of performance.

Speaking at the National Roads Authority’s Annual Roads Conference in Sligo today, Fred Barry, CEO, National Roads Authority, Said, “We are very pleased to be associated with such an award”.
