M50 Traffic Update: Change to Traffic Layout at M50/N7 (Red Cow) and M5/Ballymount from 31st May 2008

From Saturday, 31st May until Monday, 23rd June 2008, there will a change to the current Traffic Layout at the M50/N7 (Red Cow) Junction 9 and M50/Ballymount Junction 10 to facilitate the construction of structures for the new M50/N7 Free-flow Junction.

Motorists are advised to heed the following changes:

M50/N7 Interchange (Red Cow)

  • M50 southbound to N7 westbound traffic will be diverted south to the Ballymount Junction where it can turn back to the Red Cow Junction via a dedicated free-flow U-turn lane and the northbound N7 Off-ramp.
  • M50 southbound to City traffic will be unaffected and continue to use the existing exit into the City.

Ballymount Interchange

  • M50 southbound traffic wishing to turn right at Ballymount Junction will be diverted to the Ballymount Roundabout where it can U-turn and travel west to Embankment Road/Belgard Road;
  • Embankment Road traffic wishing to turn right on to the M50 southbound will be diverted to the Ballymount Roundabout where it can U-turn and access the M50 southbound via the free-flow On-ramp
  • Traffic signals on the east side of Ballymount Bridge will be switched off.

South Dublin County Council says ‘‘The traffic layout being implemented at Red Cow Junction for the next three weeks is necessary to enable the construction of structures needed to segregate the various road traffic and tram movements to provide the new future free-flow Junction”. “We urge motorists to be cautious when using the revised traffic layout and encourage drivers to plan their journeys’ in advance, to minimise disruption to traffic flows during this period”.

The M50 Upgrade Scheme involves adding a third lane in each direction on the M50 over a distance of 31km between the M1 and Sandyford Interchanges. Works on the three Phases are currently underway and Phase 1, which began in 2006, is due to be completed this year. The M50 Upgrade Scheme is due to be fully completed in 2010.
