Leenane - Open for Business

July 27, 2007

Less then two weeks after a major flash flood in Connemara washed away century-old bridge in Leenane, County Galway, NRA and County Galway Engineers erected a new temporary bridge on the N59 at Leenane. The new bridge will allow residents and tourists direct access to Leenane village across the river Lahill. In addition, the link between Westport and Clifden along the N59, one of Ireland's busiest tourist routes, has been reopened.

John Iliff Senior Project Engineer, NRA Bridge Group stated;  "I'm very proud of all the work we accomplished here over the last few days. Everyone did a fine job. Leenane is open for business."

"We are very aware of the importance Leenane plays in local and regional tourism, a real team effort was put in over the last week. All involved worked many hours, so we could open up this bridge today. It's a job well done."  said John Morgan, Director of Services Galway County Council.

Background Notes

  • The temporary bridge is estimated to carry approximately 4,000 vehicles a day.
The temporary bridge will remain in place until the final design and construction of a permanent structure is complete.
