The challenge facing TII is to deliver a safe and efficient network of national roads and light rail within the framework of sustainable development.

Environmental Integration Strategy

TII has put a four-phase strategy in place to further the integration of environmental issues into road and light rail project planning, construction and operation.

Construction Guidelines

TII has published guidance documents to minimise the impact of scheme construction on certain animals, habitats and wetland archaeology.

TII’s Environmental Policy and Compliance section has undertaken various post EIA evaluation research projects as part of TII’s on-going Research Strategy.

Noise Maps

Under the Environmental Noise Regulations 2006 (S.I. No. 140 of 2006), TII is a designated noise mapping body for the development of strategic noise maps for all major national roads carrying in excess of 3 million vehicles a year and for light rail lines.

Planning Guidelines

TII is currently developing a series of environmental guidelines to facilitate further the integration of various environmental issues into national road scheme planning.
